On November 19, International Men’s Day celebrates worldwide the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities. The day highlights positive role models and raises awareness of men’s well-being. Interestingly calls for an International Men’s Day (IMD) have been going on since at least the 1960’s when it was reported in the New York Times, Feb 24 1969 that “Many men have been agitating privately to make February 23 International Men’s Day, the equivalent of March 8, which is International Women’s day“. This Day for women was first inaugurated in 1909! (International Men's Day)
While it may seem like men don't need a special day, it was this year that Richard V Reves founded the American Institute for Boys and Men. There is even a Global Initiative for Boys & Men. Just last week, right after Veterans Day, CBS Sunday Morning explored gender disparities from a male perspective. According to the American Institute for the Prevention of Suicide, the suicide rate in the United States is highest among Middle-Aged White Males - who die by suicide at a pace about four times that of women.
We already know that suicide is a problem among Veterans, but it is an issue for all of us - all humans worldwide. The topic comes up for discussion frequently at Bailey's and we are always here to listen. We also support the efforts of our local schools and civic organizations like Carencro Kiwanis and Evangeline Area Council of BSA.
We invite you to support such organizations in your community, and to support each other. An easy way to do that is by staying in touch. Email, text, phone call, and ZOOM all work, but nothing beats an in-person visit! Grab two of your favorite cigars and go visit a buddy - better yet, y'all come visit us and we'll all have a premium cigar together.
